Hard to believe it’s already been almost a year since this disaster…
Let me start off by saying I had no intention whatsoever of running the Donald Half during Marathon Weekend. None. Nuttin’. Nada. But when a running buddy – who I think has never had a bad run in her life – says “hey, there’s a bunch of us running over marathon weekend, come join us”, who am I to say no? An idiot, that’s who. Still on a high from a great-for-me Wine and Dine Half, the thought of doing a second runDisney event looked oh-so-appealing. Um, yeah. Not so much. 6 miles in, IT bands on the fritz, and an emotional breakdown along whatever freakin’ road I was on, and I was done.
Pissed off, in pain, and ready to knock the teeth out of my knees, does not a good Black Dog combination make on race day. So. Moving on, I took four months off, jumped out of my skin until this proud moment…
…and had what I thought was, for the most part, a pretty darn good training cycle for the Wine and Dine Half. And then…dunh dunh duuuunnnnnhhhhh, (insert dramatic music here)…..
And if wasn’t for these two nuts…
…and this one big nut…
I doubt very much I would have made it across the finish line.
Now here I am, this time on a doctor-imposed running hiatus, and ready to crawl out of my skin. AGAIN. The question of the hour being where do I go from here? Try not to think about what The Man might have to say in a couple of months? Make myself all crazy every time I go to the gym and see everyone else doing everything I want to be doing but it’s against doc’s orders? Bury my new-found misery in a giant bowl of Moose Tracks?
And just like that, we’re at the end of another year. One that seems to me – at least runningwise – to have had more downs than ups. At least though, on the personal front, there were plenty more smiles and laughter than there were tears. New race experiences, new partners in crime, new locations visited, a few new wines tasted – okay a LOT of new wines tasted – and new plans to look forward to in 2015.
And just like that…..
Enjoy the ride.
How quickly did 2014 pass for you? What were the highlights, or lowlights, of your year?
I think the moose tracks idea is a great one! Hopefully 2015 will be an improvement over 2014 in terms of running, but when you have great friends and family, the other stuff can take a backseat, or maybe the curb! I’m excited about 2015, and especially getting acclimated in our new neighborhood. Lulu has already enjoyed a few walks and is trying to dominate all the dogs in the hood. That’s what happens when your dog weighs a mere 6 pounds.
My philosophy is the smaller the dog, the bigger the attitude. Sounds like Miss Lulu will have that neigborhood shaped up to her liking in no time. You go little itty bitty dog! 🙂
I hope 2015 is a much better year for running for you. Other than running though, it sounds like you had a great 2014! Friends, good wine, a great man, and a loving dog are all more important anyway. 🙂
Agreed! It can be so easy to lose sight of the all the other good stuff in your life when the one thing you do to keep your sanity, is off limits. 🙂
Everything is better with moose tracks. I’m sorry about the injuries and can totally relate. I hope that 2015 will be a much healthier run year for us both. Otherwise it sounds like your 2014 was great!
Can’t complain too much when you have all of this going for ya!
Sorry about your issues, injuries suck quite frankly! The highlight of my year I think running wise was the best runDisney race ever…Tower of Tower, so of course its been discontinued….hopefully temporarily! I also was proud I did a race here in ATL that I had been avoiding cuz its hilly here and I like flat. The year HAS flown by, somehow I signed upu for the WDW Full and hopefully I start the year off with a grin and Mickey medal at the finish! Very fun post though. Hoping you heal up soon.
Hahahahaha! I love that whole “I don’t know how it happened, but somehow I signed up to run TWENTY SIX FREAKIN’ MILES!!” I guarantee no matter how ugly those miles may get, you will have the biggest, stupidest grin on your face when you hit that finish line! Good luck!:)
Here’s hoping 2015 finds you healthy and running lots of happy miles!
Thanks Sarah! You too! 🙂
OMG 2014 FLEW by! I feel like I blinked and almost missed it! I’m still really sad about your stupid knees. Tell them they need to get better in time for W&D 2015!
I don’t care if I have to do it in a wheelchair, Wine and Dine 2015 will be EPIC.
I will gladly carry you for any road race, anytime, anywhere. You and Kellie were the highlight of my 2014 running year.
You say that now. You better get those little T-rex arms of yours to the gym, otherwise it could end up pretty ugly for all of us. 🙂
Nicole and I were clearly the best part of 2014. CLEARLY. 🙂
Like I would ever disagree with that statement. EVER.
